CSA President Jefferson Finis Davis' Biography:
Jefferson Finis Davis (June 3, 1808 - December 6, 1889) was a West Point graduate who served as the first and only President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865, during the American Civil War Between the States.
After graduating from West Point, Davis served in the US Army as a Colonel of volunteers in the Mexican-American War. He also served as Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce and as US Senator from Mississippi. Davis was elected president of the Confederate States of American for a six-year term.
After the War for Southern Independence, he was held for two years in prison and charged with treason, but never tried. After his release, he traveled and wrote extensively.
Davis died at the age of 81 in New Orleans and was buried in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans.
Four years later, his body was taken to Confederate Memorial Hall where Louisiana Governor Murphy J. Foster delivered a funeral address, which was followed by a 1,200-mile-funeral-train trip to Richmond, Virginia. His official funeral took three years to plan. Davis' body was taken to the Alabama state capitol, the Georgia state capitol, the North Carolina state capitol, Virginia State House, and then was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Six state governors acted as pallbearers. Even 28 years after the end of the War Between the States, the crowd at the cemetery was estimated at 75,000 mourners. As his funeral train passed by, hundreds of thousands lined the railroad tracks and placed flowers alongside the tracks. Davis' funeral was one of the largest ever held in the South.
